The Story of Draupadi

💫 The Story of Draupadi — The Woman with Five Husbands

This is one of the most misunderstood stories in ancient mythology — often misidentified in Southeast Asian temples as the tale of the god Vishnu and the serpent princess. In truth, it comes from Hindu epic tradition and tells the remarkable life of Draupadi, the wife of the five Pandava brothers.

The Story of Draupadi

🏰 The Family of the Pandavas

In the great Hindu epic Mahabharata, the five Pandava brothers — Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva — were all married to the same woman, Draupadi. Despite this unusual union, their household was filled with peace and mutual respect. Draupadi was not seen as a weak woman; rather, she was celebrated for her strength, intelligence, and devotion.

🎲 The Fatal Game of Dice

One day, the Pandavas were invited by their cousins — the Kauravas — to a royal feast. The cunning prince Shakuni challenged Yudhishthira to a game of dice called Dayakattai. Shakuni was a master of deceit. One by one, Yudhishthira lost everything — his wealth, his kingdom, his brothers, and finally, even his beloved wife, Draupadi.

😔 The Humiliation of Draupadi

Draupadi was brought into the crowded hall by Dushasana, a Kaurava prince, who cruelly tried to strip her in public to disgrace the Pandavas. In her despair, Draupadi called upon Lord Krishna for protection. Miraculously, as Dushasana pulled at her garments, her clothes became endless — a divine intervention that saved her honor.

“Her prayer was answered, and her dignity was preserved — a timeless symbol of divine justice against cruelty and deceit.”

⚔️ The Oath and the Great War

Draupadi swore that she would not tie her hair again until she saw justice served. This oath fueled the Kurukshetra War — a colossal battle between the Pandavas and Kauravas, resulting in the destruction of nearly all the royal warriors of both sides. The war became one of the most defining moments in ancient Indian history and spiritual literature.

🪶 Legacy on Khmer Temples

Scenes from this story can be found carved on the walls of ancient Khmer temples. However, many modern viewers misinterpret these carvings as other Hindu legends. In reality, they represent Draupadi’s humiliation and her divine protection — a reminder of moral justice and faith.
