Funan Kingdom — Early Khmer State
Funan Kingdom was the first Khmer state, established roughly during the 1st–6th centuries AD. It had close relations with China during the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 AD), involving trade, culture, and security.
Trade and Economy
Funan became an important trade hub connecting China and India. China exported goods like iron, jewelry, and precious wood to Funan, while Funan exported rice, ivory, and precious stones in return.
Military and Security Relations
China recognized Funan as a key state in Southeast Asia. This relationship helped secure trade routes and ensure safe passage of goods.
Cultural Influence
Funan absorbed Chinese cultural influences, including writing systems for administration and religion. Chinese records indicate that Kaundinya received official trade permits from China.
Chinese Records
The Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi), Book of Wu, documents Funan’s trade routes and official relations with the Wu dynasty, including envoy exchanges and goods trade.
