Born on March 15, 1944, in Doung Village, Kampong Trach District, Kampot Province, Kong Nay lost his eyesight at age four due to measles. Yet, his passion for music began early. At 13, he started learning the Chapei Dang Veng from his father, and by 15, he became a professional performer, captivating audiences with his witty, poetic lyrics and deep voice.

- 1991: Won 1st place in the National Chapei Competition in Phnom Penh.
- 2001: Awarded the title “Elder Master of Khmer Art and Culture.”
- 2017: Received the prestigious Fukuoka Prize (Japan) for Arts and Culture.
Some of his notable works include: Mekong Delta Blues (2007), Master of Chapei Dang Veng (2015), and his collaboration with rapper VannDa on Time to Rise. He also taught younger generations through Cambodian Living Arts (CLA) to preserve the Chapei tradition.

During the Khmer Rouge regime, music was forbidden, and Kong Nay was forced into labor. After 1979, he returned to the stage and became a symbol of cultural resilience. In 2016, UNESCO recognized the Chapei Dang Veng as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding,” largely due to his lifelong dedication.
