Sacred Objects Derived from Plants — Khmer Ancestral Beliefs
According to Khmer beliefs, any unusual or extraordinary characteristics in humans, animals, or plants are considered sacred. Even with modern science, these phenomena cannot be fully explained as they were experienced and respected by our ancestors.
Năng Puon in Bamboo
Năng Puon often appears in bamboo stalks. When present, the stalks may grow unusually thick, and at night some glow like stars. Ceremonies are conducted on auspicious days, offering fruits and incense to invite the sacred spirit.
Năng Puon in Banana Trees
In banana trees, the presence of Năng Puon is signaled by growth around the middle of the trunk. During fruiting, its power is said to strengthen. Most Năng Puon in banana trees appear white and glossy.
Năng Puon in Areca Nuts
They often reside in ripened areca nuts in the soil. One or two seeds may be hard and shiny. Devotees can gain protection and success by offering prayers.
Năng Puon in Trees
In trees with hollow trunks, the presence of Năng Puon prevents fire damage. At night, some may emit a faint glow. These types are usually the largest and strongest.
Sacred Objects in Coconuts
Coconuts with one or five eyes are considered to possess the power of Năng Puon. They can help protect weapons and bring luck and success.
